Leonardo diCaprio was born in Los Angeles to German-born Irmelin, a former legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, a comic book writer and artist. Given the name Leonardo because his pregnant mother was looking at a da Vinci painting when he first kicked, he began acting in commercials and educations films, before getting his break in the TV series Parenthood in 1990. Debuting on the silver screen in the film Critters 3 in 1991, he was handpicked by Robert de Niro to play the lead in This Boy’s Life in 1992, his breakthrough. Playing the mentally handicapped brother to Johnny Depp in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993 proved his acting chops, earning him a nomination for an Acadaemy Award and a Golden Globe. After playing Romeo in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and subsequently starring in James Cameron’s Titanic, DiCaprio has since enjoyed mainstream success, earning critical acclaim and starring in such films as Catch Me If You Can, Gangs Of New York, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Departed, Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island, Inception, Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street.
